---- Drive Makes Noises After A Period of Inactivity Western Digital has developed a firmware update to reduce the mechanical noise associated with our wear leveling feature. Aside from the audible noise, this operation is normal and actually improves drive reliability by reducing the time the heads spend in the same location when the drive is at idle. The wear leveling feature is non-destructive and the additional noise is not an indication of potential drive failure. If you have experienced an increase in noise levels when the drive appears to be at idle, and you have a WD Caviar model number AC11200, AC22000, AC22500, AC33200, AC34000, AC34300 or AC35100, you can update the firmware in your drive using our overlay utility, Overlay4. To update your hard drive Download Overlay4 to an empty subdirectory on your hard drive. In order for the overlay program to properly identify the hard drive, exit Windows '9x and reboot to a Command prompt (C:\>). To run the utility, type WDOVRLY4 and the ENTER key.
