Caution:

Please read these instructions carefully before beginning the installation. Failure to follow these instructions precisely may result in damage to your modem. If after reading these instructions you are not comfortable replacing the chip yourself, please seek assistance from your dealer.

If you have an INTERNAL modem, follow these six steps and then skip to number 7…

  1. Turn off and unplug your computer and any peripheral devices. Unplug the phone cord from the back of your modem.

  2. Remove the computer’s cover. Refer to the computer manual, if necessary, to see which rear panel screws to remove before sliding the cover off.

  3. Locate the expansion slot the modem is occupying. Unscrew the top screw of the modem’s bracket.

  4. Gently lift the modem out of its expansion slot.

  5. Turn your modem so that the chips and sockets are visible and the modem bracket and dip switches are on the right hand side(See below picture).

  6. Find the brown plastic socket located in the lower left corner(See below picture).

    Internal Modem

If you have an EXTERNAL modem, follow these six steps, then continue with number 7…

  1. Unplug the phone cords, computer cable and power cord from the modem.

  2. Turn your modem face down and unscrew the two screws on the bottom half of the modem.

  3. Carefully open the modem case by lifting the bottom half of the modem off of the top half.

  4. Gently remove the modem circuit board from the modem case.

  5. Turn the circuit board so that the chips and sockets are visible and the volume control knob is on the left hand side(See below picture).

  6. Find the brown plastic socket located approximately one inch to the right of the volume control knob(See below picture).

    External Modem

    1. Insert the chip puller in the small slot located in the corner of the socket so that the handle of the puller is perpendicular to the chip(See picture to the left and below).

      Caution:Inserting the chip puller at the incorrect angle may result in damage to the socket.

  1. Gently press the handle of the chip puller down to lift the chip partially away from the circuit board(See picture below). Repeat this process on the opposite corner to carefully lift the chip completely from the socket.

  2. Once removed, place this chip off to the side. Inspect the chip socket carefully to be sure it was not damaged during removal.

  3. Remove the chip, supplied in the upgrade kit, from the plastic carrier and match the flattened corner of the chip to the flattened corner of the socket.

  4. After making sure that these two flattened corners are lined up, press this chip firmly into place until fully seated in the socket.

  5. If you have an external modem, replace the board in the bottom half of the case. Snap the top of the modem case onto the bottom and replace the screws.

    If you have an internal modem, insert the modem into its original expansion slot and screw the bracket into place. Replace the computer cover and all its screws.

  6. Plug phone cords, computer cables and power cords into their original sockets.

  7. Your chip upgrade is now complete. Type AT&F1S0=0&W&F2S0=0&W1YZ in Terminal Mode of your communications software to reset your modem.

  8. If you don’t get an OK in Terminal Mode, please check that the phone cords, computer cable, and power cord are plugged in properly. If your modem is not functioning properly, please call U.S. Robotics Technical Support at (847)982-5151 for assistance and an SRO number. If your modem has been damaged during this installation, you will need to return your modem to U.S. Robotics for repair.
